A students perspective- some things for you to think about when making your decision

Why are you thinking about studying architecture? Perhaps you are interested in new technologies and environmental issues and their relation to buildings, maybe you are interested in housing issues, maybe you are interested in building communities and communication between different groups of people, or perhaps you simply just enjoy looking at buildings.

On the other hand, maybe you don't like architecture, but you are considering studying it because your parents are architects so it seems like the obvious option, or you are good at maths and art and thought art+maths means I should be an architect. Maybe you want to be an artist but friends and family are saying become an architect instead or maybe you just like the sound of being an architect.

Your initial motivation for choosing to study architecture or to become an architect is likely to change as you progress and learn more about the subject, you may start off not liking architecture and end up loving it, or things might even work the other way round, but in the end, it might be beneficial to check the reasons for your choice. It is also important to remember that the first 3 years of the course is a degree, which can be used just like any other degree to find jobs after you graduate if you choose not to continue with the professional qualification.

Preconceptions of the architecture profession and of what an architect does are often erroneous. Many students find out that studying architecture is not what they thought it was going to be after just a few days or weeks into their course. Many students are then again surprised to find that working in an architectural practice is generally very different to what they were doing during their architectural education. It takes 7 years to become an architect, so it is important to get a basic understanding of what an architect does and what an architecture student does before you start your journey.

Architecture is a strange and complicated subject which requires learning numerous different skills and thinking creatively and logically in many different ways. It is a fascinating course to study, but it is also extremely demanding and often very intense; with reports, presentations, reviews, essays, dissertations, drawings, models, computer work, experimentation, meetings and project portfolios all needing your attention. But this work is often fun and rewarding, and a fulfilling challenge to motivated, hard working students.
